These figurines are 19th century Chinese porcelain models of the eight immortals from Chinese mythology. Revered by the Taoist faith, they are depicted often in paintings, decorative porcelain and sculpture. Dating from around the 8th century, they represent the female, male, old, young, rich, poor, noble and humble in society. The Sotheby’s Scottish Art sale brings together the finest drawings, watercolours and oil paintings from a wide selection of Scottish artists from the late 19th and 20th centuries. The sale will be on view in the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh from 5–7 November prior to the pre-sale exhibition in London.
