COMMITMENT TO PEST CONTROL
A commitment to control Grey squirrel populations must be one of the conditions fulfilled by applicants applying for support under a new forestry funding programme announced by the government. Farmers, foresters and land managers will be able to apply for up to £6800 per hectare to plant, weed and protect woodland. Grey squirrels are invasive and are recognised as a pest species. Recent figures released by the EU show that non-native species cost member states £12bn a year.
