COM­MIT­MENT TO PEST CON­TROL

A com­mit­ment to con­trol Grey squir­rel pop­u­la­tions must be one of the con­di­tions ful­filled by ap­pli­cants ap­ply­ing for sup­port un­der a new forestry fund­ing pro­gramme an­nounced by the gov­ern­ment. Farm­ers, foresters and land man­agers will be able to ap­ply for up to £6800 per hectare to plant, weed and pro­tect wood­land. Grey squir­rels are in­va­sive and are recog­nised as a pest species. Re­cent fig­ures re­leased by the EU show that non-na­tive species cost mem­ber states £12bn a year.
