WILDERNESS RESCUE

Scottish Field - - COUNTRY NEWS -

An initiative to save ancient Scots pines across the Highlands of Scotland from becoming the last generation in a lineage of trees dating back to the last ice age, has been launched. Conservation charity, Trees for Life, wants to restore 50 areas of neglected pinewoods mainly made up of lone, ancient ‘granny pines’, which are more than 200 years old and are dying because they stand with no young trees to succeed them. If the forests are not restored, wildlife dependent on them will be at risk. The charity has already raised £15,000 for the project and is looking for a further £20,000 from the public to be able to start work. www.treesforlife.org.uk/appeal
