During an uneventful drive from the Lothians we gradually became aware of some snow on the distant hills and as we reached Aberdeen it was apparent that there had been considerable snowfall in the previous few days. We left the A96 just past Inverurie and drove through the charming village of the Chapel of Garioch which has managed to maintain its historic charms despite the inevitable addition of some modern houses on its periphery.

And suddenly we were there. Standing amidst 2,400 acres of scenic estate and under the benign gaze of the iconic, snow-capped Bennachie was our destination, Pittodrie House Hotel. As we alighted from our car a few fresh snowflakes fluttered past our ears giving us the distinct impression that we were on the brink of something special. We were not disappointed.

Pittodrie House Hotel is the perfect venue for a hideaway special occasion with a touch of luxury. It boasts an impressive high-ceilinged drawing room and dining rooms and genuine log fires abound. Our room was spacious and luxurious and the bathroom was out of this world.

Dinner in the impressive Mither Tap Restaurant was utterly exquisite and the staff helpful and knowledgeable. I chose Pittodrie Estate roe deer loin for my main course and my taste buds were well rewarded. The presentation of all dishes was sublime and while the portion sizes were perfectly adequate for me, my only cautionary comment about our whole experience would be that they could have been larger. Throughout my stay my need for a gluten-free diet was greeted with equanimity and catered for with skill and sensitivity. Pittodrie House Hotel boasts an attractive walled garden and is situated within easy reach of all that Aberdeenshire can offer. Whether it be fishing or golf, clay pigeon shooting, hill walking or visiting places of cultural and historical interest you will find it all close by and if that sounds a little too energetic then there are those 2,400 acres in which to chill out.

We are pleased to recommend Pittodrie House Hotel for that special break away in a wonderful part of the country. Prices from £73.
