Glenddoch Hotel, Langbank, Glasgow

Even on a drab day, the main hotel building is an imposing sight. A mere 20 minutes from Glasgow city centre, it is set in 360 acres of hills and parkland with fabulous views over the Clyde and surrounding countryside. Originally built by shipping magnate Sir James Lithgow, the hotel has 75 rooms, a spa and an 18-hole championship golf course.
On arrival, we were warmly welcomed and given the key to a palatial suite, richly decorated in monochrome and gold. The bathroom had a roll-top bath and separate shower – a real plus for me – and complimentary Elemis toiletries. Robes and slippers were also provided for use in the spa, our next stop.
Featuring Elemis and Ishga treatments, the spa has been recently refurbished and the relaxation room is very peaceful and zen. It is extremely popular so pre-booking well in advance of any visit is definitely recommended. There is also a gym, a decent sized swimming pool, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, a sauna and a steam room.
Heated ceramic recliners overlook the grounds down to the river. After a pre-dinner drink we headed to the Vista restaurant for a three-course dinner. Food was well-cooked and presented, with most bottles of wine reasonably priced between £22-35. Breakfast was a buffet comprising the full Scottish, including porridge, cereals and a continental breakfast selection.
Gleddoch is close to local attractions such as the Burrell Collection, Loch Lomond and is 15 minutes from Glasgow Airport. Without exception, staff were friendly and helpful. On check-out, each guest is given a goody bag with snacks and a bottle of water for the onward journey. Now, that really is going the extra mile.
Prices from £129 per couple per night DBB.
