Cropping up

Scottish Field - - NEWS -

Ancient settlements and Roman fortifications have been discovered in the Scottish Borders thanks to the summer heatwave. The crop marks, which are normally hidden under the plough soil, include Iron Age souterrains and a Roman temporary camp at Lyne near Peebles. The complex already includes two forts and two additional temporary camps. The marks have formed as the crops responded to dry summer conditions and this has allowed Historic Environment Scotland to document known sites that haven’t been visible for many years.
