outside catering, so I’ve worked in many domestic and commercial kitchens. I know all about designating the wet, dry and clearing areas and I always try to put that into practice to create a space that really works. I knew I really needed an island as there’s not masses of workspace around the room and I had to have an Aga. I can’t live without my Aga.’
It was whilst excavating a wall in the kitchen to put in the extractor for the Aga that the couple uncovered the original, and rather beautiful, stone wall.
‘Usually the range cooker would have been in the basement but because this house has never had a basement belonging to it, the original kitchen was on the ground floor, hence the range and the stone backdrop. It’s such a lovely feature we decided to keep it. We’ve used limestone tiles on the floor and granite worktops and the whole look is quite honest which I think complements the house.’
The kitchen isn’t typical of the usual Tremmel version as Katrina readily admits. ‘My tastes have changed over the years, I’m not reinventing the wheel, but I have evolved. I like to bring in a little bit of the contemporary – like the striped carpet on the stair and I like colour as well – a touche de rouge so to speak.’
This is much in evidence in the master bedroom where Katrina has combined a traditional look with modern ideas to create a master bedroom suite which is now akin to something you’d find in a boutique hotel.
‘Bathing is a sensual experience and it’s quite nice to have that experience in
your bedroom. Fitting the free-standing bath in the bedroom also allowed us to have a spacious shower room with a walk-in shower rather than trying to cram a bath in. It’s a really nice space, I like going to bed at night and I don’t want to leave it in the morning.’
The suite also benefits from an abundance of storage thanks to the wall of wardrobes which blend perfectly. ‘It is a bit of a Tremmel thing, we’ve done it in a lot of our properties,’ she says. ‘Ron likes to make things look seamless and as though they’ve always been there. It was absolutely the right thing to do here.’
Whilst Katrina and Ron are very much the driving force behind this project, they have relinquished the reins a little as they try to retire. ‘Wilson & Wilson carried out all the building and renovation works as Ron and I are supposed to be retired,’ she laughed. ‘However, we’ve been working with Daryl (Wilson) for years as he was our contract manager for Tremmel Properties so it’s been a very smooth process. Daryl knows how Ron and I work and think, so it’s a great collaboration.’
The collaboration isn’t finished yet either, with the sitting room and a few other bits and pieces still to be tweaked. ‘We’re taking our time with this house, there’s no rush. This property is really easy. It’s big enough to feel spacious but compact enough to manage. There’s no garden to worry about and we can pack up and travel if we feel like it. I don’t know if this is our forever house, but I can’t see us moving from here.’
