THREE FAMILY WALKS IN THE BORDERS

-

Eildon Hills, Melrose

The Eildon Hills are a set of three rounded summits surrounded by Borders countryside with the languid River Tweed flowing below. It is also a place of mystery – in the 13th century the laird, Thomas the Rhymer, was spirited away from the hills by the Queen of the Fairies. He wasn’t seen for years despite claiming he had only been gone for a few days. Contemplate this properly in the old-fashioned pub, the Ship Inn.

Pirn Hill and Leithen Water, Innerleithen

Like the Eildons, Pirn Hill above Innerleithen was used by Iron Age man. The fort offered a good view along the Tweed and that military advantage is enjoyed today for more aesthetic reasons. Coupled with a stroll along the Leithen Water, it makes for a lovely day out in the Borders. Finishing in the wonderful Traquair Arms in the village you will have a perfect late winter or early spring day out sorted for the family.

Hirsel Estate, Coldstream

The Hirsel Estate is a good example of how a large area of land and property can diversify and thrive in the 21st century. A seat of the DouglasHome family, it carries out the usual estate activities such as farming and forestry as well as craft shops, a tea room and brilliant set of trails which allow for a good family trip. If you don’t try the tea room there is also the The Besom Inn, just down the road in Coldstream.
