Merchiston cares for every boy by developing positive values, a commitment to learning and a sense of personal identity. A relentless focus on the individual is something the school takes great pride in delivering, which allows boys to hone their skills as they shape an educational experience that is truly their own. Merchiston boys thrive because they are known, understood, valued, and supported, regardless of their chosen field of endeavour. The school’s success proves that what they do works.

The school has an impressive record of helping boys excel beyond their predictions at every level. At A Level, Merchiston achieved a formidable 50% A*-A rate and a 77% A*-B rate, the only school in Scotland to achieve this high standard. With 21% of pupils achieving an A* this is more than double the national A* attainment of 8.3% (ISC, 2018). Whilst the school is, and remains, principally an A Level school, a bespoke curriculum affords the opportunity to capitalise on the English and Scottish systems by offering uniquely tailored combinations of qualifications, with outstanding outcomes; for example, in 2018, the average Merchiston Upper Sixth pupil’s UCAS points tally was 141 (as a guide, AAA at A Level is 144 points and AAB is 136 points). Pupils annually secure places at some of the leading British, Ivy League and other outstanding international universities.

Merchiston prides itself on fostering the pursuit of excellence in a sport-for-all environment and is proud to be the Scottish Schools’ U18 Rugby Champions, the No.2 UK Golf School and No.2 World Tennis School 2017-19.*

Jonathan Anderson, Headmaster, comments: ‘Our small community means that there is ample opportunity for every boy to engage in many aspects of school life which, in a positive way, can encourage each individual to step out of his comfort zone and try something new, or discover a hidden talent! I truly believe that Merchiston is a remarkable place for boys to make lifelong friends while gaining a world-class education.’ *ISGA / ISF
