Scottish Field

Spending time outdoors is good for us. No controversy there. But here in Scotland, the weather can scupper an outdoorsy lifestyle.

One solution is to build a covered verandah. Take this Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park country home (picture 1), where we created a large wraparound verandah, linking the beautiful outside landscape with the house. The high-quality stonework and carpentry enhance this generous space, where you can sit or dine in various spots. It’s a key feature of this house, and is appreciated every day.

As designers, we think carefully about how to create a variety of living spaces, internally and externally. Each should provide a different experience for the owner. We think of these verandahs – or decks – as another room.

In a house on Arran which boasts great sea views, we designed a secondstorey verandah off the upstairs main living rooms, creating an extended living space. The owners enjoy sea-breezes and evening sunsets from the comfort of a lounge chair on the covered deck.

There are various ways of integrating a verandah. One is to create expansive doors so that the inside flows out, using seamless floor finishes. Alternatively, an extended roof can create a ‘found space’ as shown in this modern home (picture 2). This feels like a secret area – perfect for enjoying a quiet morning coffee.

These outdoor spaces work well as considerable thought has gone into their orientation and flow. Failing to plan properly can lead to an expensive addition that doesn’t feel right.
