Mill House, Monzie Estate

- REVIEWED BY JOHN & FIONA MILLER FROM OBAN

The Mill House on Monzie Estate is a rather special destination. On arrival we were given a tour of the house and it soon became clear that the building has been meticulously converted with great attention to detail and to the highest standards.

Close to the Shaggie Burn, the property offers a peaceful rural setting yet is within a few miles of Crieff and numerous other places of interest. There are endless walking opportunities from the house allowing you to seek out Perthshire’s renowned wildlife and the wide range of dining venues nearby. Breakfast was served in a large, bright, open-plan kitchen, dining and reception area enhanced by a wood-burning stove. There was a good choice of artisan breads and croissants, cold meats and cheese as well as fresh fruit, cereal and yogurt.

An interesting diversion was a guided tour of Monzie Castle which is usually available to guests staying for three or more nights. It gave a fascinating insight into life over the centuries including a catastrophic fire over a hundred years ago. The burned out shell was restored under the guidance of Sir Robert Lorimer, one of the foremost architects of the period.

The estate has several other tastefully restored properties for self-catering and this option is available for Mill House too. For discerning guests it is obvious that all the hard work has been worthwhile and certainly convinced us that this hidden gem is well worth a visit. Monzie Estate is ideally suited to relax and unwind in a tranquil setting, yet only a short drive or longer walk from Crieff.
