ROCK N' ROLL
I've always been fascinated by Staffa and Fingal's Cave, so it's little surprise that I enjoyed Samuel Hess's stunning pictures of the island in the November issue of Scottish Field [Rock of Ages].
I wanted to put pen to paper to let you know that it wasn't just Mendessohn who was fascinated and inspired by the beauty of this place. A stream of famous visitors including Sir Walter Scott, John Keats, JMW Turner, Jules Verne, William Wordsworth, David
Livingstone and Robert Louis Stevenson headed out to its rocky shores. The island even got the royal treatment with a visit from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1847, when they were rowed into Fingal's Cave on the royal barge.
I haven't been fortunate enough to visit the island myself yet, but after seeing these atmospheric photographs in Scottish Field a trip is nearing the top of my bucket list.
