TRIED AND TESTED
WHAT IS IT? Keela Sherpa jacket. RRP £109.95. www.keela.co.uk
I WANT IT BECAUSE: It’s a great technical thermal (Primaloft) jacket that can be used either as a midlayer or stand-alone outer jacket. It’s also very good value for money.
USEFUL FOR: All facets of outdoor life. Its arms also come off, so it quickly becomes a gilet.
HIGH POINT: As it was designed with the hills in mind, it’s fairly light, and water/wind-resistant. It also has lots of nice ergonomic touches: the neck baffle and hem are adjustable with one hand; there are two zipped hip pockets, a map-sized pocket, hand-warming pockets, adjustable cuffs, and a twoway main zip.
LOW POINT: None.
WHAT IS IT? Komperdell C4 trail sticks. RRP £129.95. www.komperdell.com
I WANT IT BECAUSE: Komperdell are decent, lightweight, extendable walking poles, and good poles mean happy knees!
USEFUL FOR: Hiking on flat or in hills.
HIGH POINT: These are good poles, that fold down to 36cm, a handy size for storing in a rucksack. They are commendably lightweight and have good foam handles that are moulded to your grip, while the padded wrist strap is very comfortable. They are nicely balanced, while the locking mechanism is easy to use.
LOW POINT: As ever with good poles, they seem to be hellishly expensive.
