THREE FAMILY WALKS IN FIFE
Bennachie
This is actually a collection of hilltops – joined across a plateau of high ground. The views are excellent – from the coast of Aberdeenshire, inland to the highest of the Cairngorms. The pine woodland below the hill is also worth spending time in, particularly if you have young children with you. Afterwards, head to Inverurie for some refreshment.
Morrone Birkwood
The Morrone Birkwood, just west of Braemar, is the best example in Britain of downy birch woodland with juniper. After the retreating ice sheet left bare mineral soils more than 10,000 years ago, the landscape would have looked like this as the hardy trees colonised the land. After a stroll head to the newly renovated Fife Arms Hotel – one of the best places to eat in Deeside.
Dunnottar Castle, from Stonehaven
A girl in a plaid dress is said to wander the ruins of Dunnottar Castle, as well as a Scandinavian man lurking in the old kitchens. Don’t let that put you off though because a coastal walk from Stonehaven to these impressive former battlements is a good day out for all, whether it is history or nature which excites. Head to the Ship Inn or Marine Hotel in Stonehaven afterwards.
