Champagne and spectacular swordsmanship combine at Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh

-

In the early 19th century during Emperor Napoleon’s march through Europe, the Hussars – his light cavalry – would open bottles of Champagne using their side sabres on a field of battle. ‘Champagne! In victory one deserves it; in defeat one needs it’, is a direct quote from Napoleon’s war diaries, in relation to his soldiers’ fondness for Champagne.

The technique was refined in the early 20th century and for more than 30 years the Confrérie du Sabre d’Or has taken great pride in celebrating Champagne with its spectacular artistry.

At Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, you can learn the Art of Sabrage with a demonstration from the hotel’s Sabrage Masters in Peacock Alley. A trained team member can demonstrate to allow you the opportunity to capture the moment or if you are feeling brave, you can even perform the act yourself. This exclusive experience is priced at £90 and includes the bottle of Champagne which is then served for you and your guests to enjoy in the iconic surroundings of Peacock Alley while you delight in recounting the moment. Guests who book afternoon tea in Peacock Alley can also upgrade their Champagne Afternoon Tea to include Sabrage.

Formerly the Princes Street Station concourse and ticket office, Peacock Alley represents the historic heart of the hotel, locally known as ‘The Caley’. In homage to the grand Caledonian Railway, the historic Caledonian station clock that survived the great station fire of 1890 is still on display in Peacock Alley. This venue steeped in heritage is the perfect place to experience Sabrage in celebration of any occasion from birthdays, engagements and anniversaries to graduations and promotions or simply an unforgettable evening with colleagues, friends or family.
