A set of five medals awarded to Major-General John Douglas, who commanded the 11th Hussars during the Crimean War and led them in the charge at Balaklava, sold for £47,120 at Dix Noonan Webb’s auction on 15 October, more than double their estimate of £15,00020,000. During the same event, the first Victoria Cross to be awarded to an Australian resident – Seaman James Gorman – sold for £297,600, smashing its valuation of £120,000 to £160,000.
