Scottish Field

Robbie the remarkable redhead

- Charles MacDonald, Perthshire

What a gorgeous picture you chose to showcase our wonderful native red squirrels on page 104 of your most recent Scottish Field magazine ['Terrific Tufties', April 2021 edition]. The little chap looks like he is full of character and cheek, perhaps on the lookout for a spot of lunch. His ears are just fabulous, and I think he is well deserving of an equally fabulous name. During our latest catch up on Zoom (I, too, have learned about this newfangled technology during lockdown), I showed the image to my young grandson who has named him Robbie – I think that fits the bill rather nicely.

I was delighted to learn that our fabulous redheads are making a comeback, even if they have faced some testing times during the past twelve months. We frequently see flashes of red darting about the woods in Perthshire, and they never fail to bring a smile. The grandchildren are, of course, particular fans, and when we are allowed to meet again outdoors, we will certainly report any of our subsequent sightings to Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels, as your writer Cal Flyn has suggested.

The title of the article itself brought back some memories. I had long forgotten about the RoSPA's (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Tufty Club that helped teach children about road safety way back in the 50s and 60s. Indeed, I believe it carried on well into the 90s. We very much enjoyed the read and look forward to the next issue.
