TRIED AND TESTED
WHAT IS IT? Gandys Alpine padded Jacket, RRP £59.99, gandysinternational.com
I WANT IT BECAUSE:
One can never have too many waterproofs that will withstand Scottish conditions. It comes in three colours to suit everyone’s taste: teal, black, or burnt orange.
USEFUL FOR: Any outdoor adventure that involves tackling wet, windy conditions on the hills.
HIGH POINT: The side pockets are deep and the interior pocket keeps valuables well protected from the elements. I ordered a large (I’m usually a UK size 12) which leaves room for layers. I also love the long body that keeps out sneaky draughts.
LOW POINT: The side pockets have poppers, not zips. But with the interior pocket for valuables, all bases are covered.
WHAT IS IT? Montane Fast Alpine 30L Back Pack. RRP £110. www.montane.com
I WANT IT BECAUSE: It’s specifically designed for walking and ski touring.
USEFUL FOR: It’s a light (1200g) day-pack for the hills. Montane’s equipment is durable and well designed, with key pockets, quickrelease buckles, axe-attachment point, ski carrying systems, easy access emergency pocket for probe/shovel etc, waterproof inner.
HIGH POINT: Simple but thoughtful things – the large number of pockets, toggles on the (big) zips, easy chest harness, lurid colour for visibility. It’s perfect as a standard
day hike pack.
LOW POINT: The shoulder straps are less padded than usual, although in seven days of walking it was perfectly comfortable.
