LBA are architects who focus on place. A large part of that focus is on developing resilient and sustainable rural communities. They work closely with estate and land owners and delve into history, explore the local context and research previous development. They then use that new-found knowledge and understanding to build ideas that reflect and enhance those spaces, with an eye on biodiversity and respect for rural context, while still delivering significant aesthetic and environmental benefits.

Similarly with new development, their strength lies in their deep commitment to sustainability. Most recently demonstrated in the success of their Imagine If design collective who were awarded The RSA Medal for Architecture.

This prestigious design competition seeks to drive innovation in the provision of affordable, efficient and healthy green homes, and tackle the need for scalable, sustainable and durable solutions that help to address the housing shortage.

Their innovative and transformational design, exploring a vision for housing of the future, integrated the benefits of shared economies through utilising community assets that would encourage individuals to remain independent, but still be part of a strong, collective neighbourhood. Using the same dynamic approach LBA have worked on a number of rural housing and regeneration schemes, each time placing community at the heart. With a drive for creative problem solving, each project is individually honed to suit the site context and aspirations of key stakeholders and community groups.

They focus on the principles that underpin the site’s community, coupled with in-depth interactive engagement to inform their design decisions, and place a strong emphasis on collaboration to find sustainable design solutions which reflect and serve local communities.

Their MD Lynsay Bell says, ‘For us, being committed to using innovative and transformational designs to explore visions for rural housing and communities of the future is a key factor in what we do. Integrating features that enhance the lives of residents with shared community assets like tool libraries and community growing spaces encourage individuals to remain independent, but still be part of a strong, collective neighbourhood.’

All of this is underpinned by their main goal of creating beautiful, comfortable, healthy internal environments that respond to concerns on climate change in home design and build, but still ensure quality and affordability on every level.
