TRIED AND TESTED
WHAT IS IT? Montane Men’s Gradient Pants. £160. montane.com
I WANT IT BECAUSE: These midweight stretch softshell pants are designed for ski touring and mountaineering, but are so adaptable they can be used for virtually anything outdoors.
USEFUL FOR: Montane are a go-to brand and these are excellent. Very comfortable, they work for skiing (they are ski-boot compatible and have removable internal snow gaiters) and hiking. The braces are also removable.
HIGH POINT: The attention to detail in mesh-lined pockets, eyelets for bootstrap attachment, doublezipped security pocket, high rear microfleece-lined waistband and thigh vents. This is top technical gear.
LOW POINT: None.
WHAT IS IT? Toggi Canopy Waterproof Coat. RRP £160. toggi.com
I WANT IT BECAUSE: Toggi have brought the comfort and style of their equestrian background to this all-purpose coat.
USEFUL FOR: This stylish but immensely practical coat is perfect for everyday wear such as commuting, walking the dogs etc.
HIGH POINT: It mixes style (a special silk-like Egyptian cotton lining from Liberty of London) with impressive practicality (waterproof zips, fabric & taped seams, large patch pockets, inner draw cord for your waist, and articulated sleeves for comfort and performance). The adjustable hood ensures your head stays dry in even the worst downpour.
LOW POINT: It is waterproof but not as warm as it looks, so make sure you wear enough layers to keep you toasty. The sleeves are also a little too tight.
