Some of Scotland’s highest gardens
There’s a chance to find out about gardening in one of the highest villages in Scotland. Leadhills, in South Lanarkshire, sits at around 1,500 feet, and has its challenges with cold winds which burn much in their path. The growing season is short and the soil poor, but there are three gardens to visit in August: an ecological garden of ‘rooms’ dedicated to wildlife; a miniature village and a colourful, immaculate one. These can be found at 106 Main Street, the Old Manse Wild Garden, and at 104 Main Street, Teddywood Bear Village. These are open on Saturday/Sunday, on August 21/22, from noon-5pm. Admission £5, children free. www.scotlandsgardens.org
