FIELD FACTS
SPECIES NAME: TETRAO UROGALLUS
SIZE: 74-80cm in length.
WINGSPAN: 87-125cm wingspan.
APPEARANCE: Male capercaillies are mainly grey/black in colour and have reddish-brown wings with a white patch on the shoulder. The head, neck and breast are tinged with blue, and the eye is highlighted by a ring of red skin. Males also have a ‘beard’, and a long tail. Females have brown plumage with striations all over the body and a reddish-brown patch on the breast.
WEIGHT: Approximately 4.3kg for a male, and up to 2kg for a female.
DISTRIBUTION: Found predominantly in the pinewoods of northern Scotland. Occasionally found in mature oakwoods.
DIET: Buds, shoots, seeds and berries.
