Alison McWhirter ‘Meditations on Colour’
Alison McWhirter, one of Scotland’s most original, distinctive and in demand contemporary artists, opens a new Solo Exhibition at the Annan Gallery, Glasgow on Saturday 4th September
Over the past two decades, Alison McWhirter has consolidated her position as arguably the most gifted artist among the younger generation of New Scottish Colourists, producing works of irresistible allure.
En oying significant and well-deserved renown home and abroad for her highly original still life paintings, range of diverse landscape motifs, bold, compelling abstracts and most recently, her ground-breaking series of reclining nudes, this is a painter making waves across the UK Art scene.
Her forthcoming exhibition has been over a year in the making and while the last year was difficult and challenging for all, it was particularly so for lison.
Grieving over the premature death of her older brother Alan, Alison was also suffering from an incapacitating spinal injury involving two herniated discs with a tear to one.
Forced by the pain to spend long periods lying on the floor, Alison found the discipline of painting cathartic, re-examining how she painted and the entire creative process around this. As a result, Alison channelled these negative experiences and has produced an outstanding selection of work that is thoughtful, colourful and uplifting.
