Women of words

A new musical work which draws inspiration from some of Gaeldom’s finest female bards and their fight against injustice will debut at this year’s Blas Festival. Buaidh nam Ban (Influence of Women) by singer and TV presenter Kim Carnie (right), marks the 200-year anniversary of Màiri Mhòr nan Òran (Big Mary of the Songs), a nurse and prolific songwriter from Skye, known for her powerful songs of protest, praise and exile. The Blas Festival celebrating Gaelic culture will run from 19-27 November in Highland venues and online.
