Scottish Field

ELECTRIC AVENUE

- Jane Michaels, Edinburgh

I was delighted to see that Scottish Field decided to theme their November issue as 'The Green Issue'. I'm hugely interested in environmental issues and await the outcomes of COP26 with bated breath.

With some incredibly ambitious emissions targets to hit, the Scottish Government has a mountain to climb.

The proposed low emission zone in Edinburgh city centre will be a start but I'm not sure that we're doing enough to encourage the move away from petrol and diesel cars.

Let's be honest, there are people who need cars to travel. Those with mobility issues and families are always going to struggle with public transport or bikes. So, electric cars are a way that they can travel more sustainably.

But where can you charge one? If you live in a flat, or anywhere else without offstreet parking you can't fit your own charging point.

On a recent trip to London I noticed the streets of Marylebone were lined with kerbside street lamps with built-in charging points for residents. Isn't this something that we should be investing in in Edinburgh city centre before the introduction of the low emission zone?
