I WANT IT BECAUSE: Mackenzie Leather are outstanding Scottish craftsmen working in leather whose work is bucket list stuff.

USEFUL FOR: This satchel is the perfect size for a laptop. It also has two double front pockets, an inside compartment for phones and Kindles etc, and a back pocket. Lined in sueded velour, it comes in ten different colours.

HIGH POINT: Durability. In their shop off the Royal Mile there’s one which has been used every day for 20 years, and it looks like new.

LOW POINT: Price, obviously. But this satchel will last you a lifetime. WHAT IS IT? Nanaimo Jacket from Canada Goose. RRP £475. www.canadagoose.com

I WANT IT BECAUSE: It’s lightweight and very waterproof, so it’s a great jacket for wet weather.

USEFUL FOR: Its back has a drop-down reflective panel for a hi-vis finish, and its cinched hood doesn’t block your line of sight. Three zipped pockets are lined with mesh, and its zips are covered to keep even the heaviest rain out.

HIGH POINT: It is lightweight and folds down into the hood, with its drawstring making it into a pouch.

LOW POINT: The lack of an interior pocket. And the price, obviously.
