WHAT IS IT? Keela Talus jacket. RRP £139.99. keelaoutdoors.com

I WANT IT BECAUSE: This durable insulated jacket is perfect for Scotland’s cool, damp conditions.

USEFUL FOR: The 60gsm PrimaLoft Gold synthetic insulation is warm and waterproof but operates like down and is zoned across the jacket, especially the torso but also the collar and hood.

HIGH POINT: It’s great value and has lots of thoughtful features – external zipped chest pockets, internal glove/map pockets, elasticated cuffs, wired hood to keep rain off your face, stretch panels.

LOW POINT: Waterresistant, not proof.

WHAT IS IT? Orvis grip-tight quilted hose-off cargo protector.

RRP £129-159. www.orvis.co.uk

I WANT IT BECAUSE: I have two smelly dogs who just love to get horribly wet and muddy.

USEFUL FOR: It is waterproof, nonslipping and can be hosed down if necessary. It protects the cargo area of your car, or the whole rear if the back seats are pulled down. It’s held in place by clips around back seat headrests, and easy to deploy. The dogs love the quilted comfort.

HIGH POINT: It has a zip if you want to put just one back seat down, and has a flap to cover the bumper (useful for you to sit on).

LOW POINT: Too big to fit in the washing machine.
