Tulloch Castle Hotel

- BY JOHN & MANDY MUIR, EDINBURGH

Tulloch Castle Hotel is situated on the hill above Dingwall looking south over the town and the Cromarty Firth. It is by far the oldest building we have stayed in as the oldest part was built in the twelfth century. Over the centuries it has been added to and recently had a fine upgrade.

Our room was located on the top floor with a balcony and uninterrupted views south over Dingwall and the hills beyond. It had a large, comfortable four-poster bed and ensuite complete with a welcoming large bath.

Dinner was three courses and was very enjoyable. I had the soup and Chicken Balmoral. My wife had smoked salmon, duo of beef and we both had the white chocolate panna cotta. There then followed a ghost tour of the castle which started conveniently in the dungeon. It appears the castle is a favourite haunt of ghost and spirit hunters who come from far and wide for the experience. Room 8 is the likely one to meet the Green Lady if you are interested.

After an uninterrupted night’s sleep we had the anticipated freshly prepared breakfast. Dingwall is on the North Coast 500 so is well situated for a stop on this popular route. We toured the Cromarty Firth and visited nearby Strathpeffer. The Storehouse of Foulis is on the Firth and has a fine farm shop, restaurant and good views. Worth a visit. There are a number of well known popular golf courses within easy reach and numerous Munros close by. An ideal comfortable hotel in a lovely area.
