The Bridge Inn

- REVIEWED BY GRANT DICKIE FROM WEST LOTHIAN

In the small village of Ratho, just outside Edinburgh, is The Bridge Inn; cosy and welcoming, it is the perfect place for a getaway.

The ensuite rooms have everything you would need including iron, hairdryer, kettle and coffee machine (just ask the staff for some milk and they will be happy to oblige).

Downstairs, there is both a bar area and large bistro restaurant where I spent a large amount of my time in the evening with a book sheltering from Storm Eunice. The atmosphere is lively without being loud, the staff are all very helpful and polite, and the food was to die for. I would definitely suggest finding out what the pie of the day is and if it is the lamb, order it. While you are in the bar or restaurant make sure to try some of their cocktails on the menu – this has to be the best and smoothest passionfruit martini I have had.

That night I slept like a baby in my four poster bed, hearing nothing from the restaurant downstairs or the storm outside.

Back in the restaurant the next morning, there was ample choice on the menu for breakfast. The storm had passed and the sun was shining allowing me perfect views from my window seat over the Union Canal running alongside the building. The canalside path offers a great walk if you’re up for it, running both east and west (just remember you have to walk back again) or, local to Ratho, there is a quaint little marina just over the bridge.
