Scottish Field

Atholl Arms Hotel

- REVIEWED BY KEVIN & HELEN THOMPSON FROM KIRKNEWTON

A trip to Perthshire is always spectacular. It enables you to reconnect with nature and the great Scottish outdoors, and one of the jewels in the region’s crown must be Dunkeld. At the head of the village, overlooking the River Tay, is the impressive Atholl Arms; an imposing, white Georgian building that has been welcoming guests since 1833.

On arrival we were greeted warmly and given the keys to the master suite, a luxurious room, full of light and original features giving it an air of grandeur. Every detail has been carefully considered to create a feeling of calm and relaxation, not least the feature bath tub in the room and the cosy fireplace to sit in front of with a glass of bubbly. The bathroom provides a double shower complete with organic bath products from The Highland Soap company. The large king-size bed certainly ensures a great night’s sleep.

Guests have the choice of two restaurants, The Riverview, or the vibrant Z’s Bar and Bistro. Both serve excellent food from the same menu and cater for all tastes. We found all the staff to be attentive and extremely friendly, adding to the whole experience – a winning combination.

Breakfast is served in The Riverview, and my full Scottish was cooked to perfection, as was my wife’s vegan option. After a full day out and a walk along the River Garry, to return to the Atholl Arms and sit in the lounge by the fire then return to the sanctuary of our suite ensured a wonderful experience.
