Self-Build Story: Our clients Moira and Paul designed and built the perfect oak frame home for their life working with Iain Hendry from Oakwrights.

Originally from Scotland, Moira and her husband Paul, from Mauritius, decided to move closer to their grown-up children and looked at various properties in Ayrshire. One oak framed house really captivated them, but unfortunately it was not in the right location. From that moment on, they were set on pursuing their dream of building an oak frame home, they just had to find a plot. The couple found a custom build development site in a beautiful village overlooking the River Doon, where outline planning permission was already granted for a 4-bedroom house. The couple purchased the plot and adapted the design to meet their exact needs and maximise the views over the beautiful countryside. Having lived in a much larger home, Moira and Paul were determined to build a house where they used all their rooms, and they elected for open plan living downstairs.

Oakwright s Frame Designer Sarah Connelly describes the design: ‘The front of the house is defined by a generous and stylish porch that opens to a vaulted and welcoming entrance hall, whilst the rear elevation makes the most of the wonderful views with large expanses of glass from the dining and living rooms. A beautiful staircase leads to four wellproportioned double bedrooms, with the vaulted and full-height glazing of the master bedroom affording uninterrupted views across the Ayrshire countryside.’

Once the house design was finalised, Iain Henry took on the management of the build process, providing a service called a turnkey. Moira and Paul visited the site as often as they could to check on progress and to ensure they were fully involved in the planning and decision-making process. This left Iain and his team to oversee the completion of the house build. Once the ground works were complete, the oak frame was erected in about a week and the encapsulation panels followed to create a dry shell with high levels of insulation and thermal efficiency. ‘Paul and Moira’s beautiful home is country contemporary in style,’ explains Iain Hendry. ‘It’s sleek and clean, without too much traditional detail, but the frame creates a country look. The frame adds a character and visible craftsmanship that allows soaring ceiling height.’

Whether our clients are dreaming of building a traditional oak framed cottage, an impressive manor house or a more contemporary-style home, our teams work with you to ensure your architectural design brings your vision to life.
