Wild about the Trossachs

- Major Richard Graham RE, Kinloss, Moray

It was so wonderful to see the picture of the Trossachs Kirk and Ben A’an in the April edition of Scottish Field

– two special places that evoke amazing memories and remind me of the special moments in my life.

Firstly, the wee gothic kirk on the banks of Loch Achray was where my wife and I were married following my return from Afghanistan – I still don’t know how we managed to squeeze over a hundred people in there. Perhaps having a Best Man wielding a sword had something to do with it… Such a beautiful building and backdrop, and a special place to remember the important things in life.

Several overseas postings and two little girls later we returned to the area as I took up a new role in Glasgow. Unfortunately, Covid changed our initial outdoor aspirations but in between various lockdowns and when rules allowed, we seized the opportunity, and our long awaited first dad and daughter wild camping trip was on.

Emily, who was four-yearsold at the time, and I quickly packed for the adventure – on an unusually bright, clear and sunny afternoon. The ascent up Ben A’an was so quiet and peaceful and I took so much pride in watching my daughter navigate the climb with her little backpack of essentials: teddy, pyjamas and toothbrush.

After making camp on the summit in our little red tent, we watched the sunset, enjoyed dinner and prepared to watch the stars over Loch Katrine. The evening show was incredible on such a clear night and I will never forget Emily’s reaction to the cloud inversion at sunrise. A truly special moment.

We now live in Moray and look forward to many more adventures in the Cairngorms. Thanks for printing that amazingly evocative photo and well done to GH Clark for taking it.
