Scottish Field

My heart is in the Highlands

- Charles and Anne Gunn, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

First, I must tell you how Scottish Field has been our saving grace during these pandemic years! For the past 20-some years, we eagerly looked forward to our once or twice yearly visits to Scotland. Suddenly Covid put a stop to that. But each month we have been able to visit through the stories and photographs, so many of the places we love, especially in the Highlands.

You cannot imagine the joy we felt on opening the June issue on the eve of our long-awaited departure to Scotland to see the article 'Back to Life'. You immediately took us 'home'. For over 12 years we have been spending our vacations on Novar Estate. Erica and Ronald Munro-Ferguson have become dear friends. In June of 2012, we, our four children and spouses, nine grandchildren – 19 of us in all spent a week at 'Ardtalla' to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.

We were royally treated by Erica, Ronald,

Neil, Paul, the chef, all the staff and it was magical. Pictures of the water garden brought back memories of the two pre-teen granddaughters spending hours reading on the bench and making flower wreaths for their hair while the boys in kilts, played rugby on the front lawn. This was to be repeated in 2020 but alas, Covid put a stop to that.

Tomorrow we fly to Glasgow (a short direct flight from our home in Halifax) and cruise the Hebrides on The Hebridean Princess. From there we will stay at 'The Granary' at the Castle of Mey and finally a cottage in Beauly. At last we are coming 'home'. Meanwhile, you keep us 'coming home' through the pages of your wonderful magazine.
