THE JOY OF FISHING

- Jim Swaffield, Torquay, Devon

In the middle of last year a guy posted on a social media shore fishing group to ask if anyone fancied a trip to Scotland. I said yes, and several people from all around the county did the same. I’m from Devon, and the others were Steve Nurse from Redcar, Mick and Kane from Newcastle, Manex from London, Tyrann from Middlesbrough (who had the idea) and Allan Saunders, from Arbroath in Scotland. We created a WhatsApp group and soon discovered that some of us were experienced anglers, some weren’t, but it was never an issue. Finally, we all agreed on a date and began planning for the four days of fishing. We tried Allan’s local spots and walked Arbroath cliffs, but the fishing was slow. Who cares when you’re fishing at these type of places? On one of our walks we met a guy fishing off peg 4 at Arbroath cliffs. We chatted for ages and when I mentioned it was my first fishing trip in Scotland, he told me his favourite spots. When all the lads met at Elliot beach, I’ve never laughed so much in years. Throughout the trip the fishing was hard, with strong tides and a big swell in high winds. We loved everything about it. Waking up for fishing with a stunning sunrise is priceless. I guess what I’m saying is it doesn’t matter what you do or where you live, if you love fishing then we’re all the same. The friendships we made will last a lifetime. We may not have caught many fish but that’s why it’s called fishing and not catching.
