Q What is the best rig to use when boat fishing for bass?

ISAAC PULLEN, BY EMAIL

DL says: Everything depends on exactly where, when and how you fish for bass. Under most circumstances, basic no frills rigs such as a simple running leger, will be effective when targeting bass afloat with either bait or lures. Some anglers like to float fish with bait too.

Q From experience I know that when fishing from the shore dawn and dusk are optimum times to catch fish, is it the same afloat?

GARY THOMPSON, BY EMAIL

DL says: In general terms I would say yes, and especially so when fishing in shallow, clear water. Once the water gets in excess of say 100 feet, I don’t think the time of day is as important as the stage of tide.

Q I want to buy an electric outboard engine for stealth fishing in shallow, inshore waters. Are these suitable for saltwater?

GORDON ATKINS, BOSTON, LINCS

DL says: I have seen numerous electric outboards used in saltwater abroad, notably in destinations that focus on flats fishing. One or two manufacturers do produce electric outboards specifically for use in saltwater; take a look at the Minn Kota Riptide Stealth.

Q What is the best way to catch bass when drifting over a reef and how do I avoid spooking them?

JACK BEESLEY, PENZANCE, CORNWALL

DL says: Stealth is essential, especially in shallow water. Cut the boat engine as far away from the target area as possible, and drift to within casting range. Long casting will minimise any risk of spooking fish.

Q On a recent trip off the Dorset coast I caught a really weirdlooking fish. It was like a mini bright red moray eel. What was it?

ANDREW NAYLOR, RICHMOND, LONDON

DL says: From the description you have given, I am certain it was a red band fish. These live in localised colonies and the Dorset coast, especially the Weymouth area, consistently produces these beautiful and rarely seen fish. Small, baited lures, such as Sabikis, are used by species hunters who target red band fish.

Q I have been using a Penn 6500 Live Liner fixed-spool reel for boat fishing. Could you suggest a suitable rod of 6/12lb-class and about 8ft long in the £100 range?

JON LEYTHORNE, SIDLESHAM COMMON, WEST SUSSEX

DL says: A salmon/pike rod rated to cast lures in the region of 20-60g should suit your needs.

You will find most of the big brands have a wide selection to choose from within your budget.
