Kayak the Scenic Way

This system of waterways and paddle trails winds through Martin County taking in the Indian River Lagoon, between Jensen Beach and Hobe Sound, and the St. Lucie River. The former is part of the Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserve while the St. Lucie River trail passes through St. Lucie Inlet State Park. Kayakers can paddle is peace and appreciate wildlife including manatees and birds.

Catch them if you can

Sitting on the most biodiverse estuary in the Northern Hemisphere, Martin County is home to 100 artificial reef systems and over 800 species of fish. Fishermen flock here for snook and Stuart is known as the Sailfish Capital of the World. Inshore, offshore, saltwater or fresh, there are plenty of opportunities to reel in a great catch and many restaurants offer a Catch and Cook programme.

Jonathan Dickinson State Park

Located just south of Stuart, the park teems with wildlife across 13 natural habitats including sand pine, flatwoods, mangroves and river swamps. Tours of the 1930s pioneer homestead of Trapper Nelson are available and visitors can explore paved and off-road biking, equestrian and hiking trails as well as taking to the Loxahatchee River or camping under the stars.

Find your zen

Situated along South Florida’s Treasure Coast, Martin County is a paradise of uncrowded beaches, wilderness and quaint little towns, as well as a plethora of wellness-focused businesses to help visitors recalibrate – like the luxurious Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa on Jensen Beach. Yogis can enjoy sunrise yoga on the beach or even yoga afloat, on a paddleboard. Martin County is the ideal place to find your bliss.

Discover Old Florida

Long before Disney made its mark, Florida was a land of farms and Martin County is a bastion of this tradition. From thoroughbreds and polo ponies to cowboys and rodeos, Martin County is an equestrian centre with miles of riding trails. And whether it’s fish off the boat, greens straight from the ground or the livest of cheeses, Martin County’s food scene is as fresh as you can get.

Take a sunset sail

Schooner Lily, a traditional wooden sailing yacht and once a cargo vessel, offers interactive day sails. Captain Fred and First Mate Jaime give shipmates the chance to spot wildlife like dolphins and bald eagles without the disruption of an engine. Glide silently down inland waters like the Saint Lucie River in the morning, afternoon or at sunset – guests can help raise the sails or relax with a cold drink.
