What makes Alabama a great destination for sport?
Birmingham, in the north central region of Alabama, is a modern city with a rich sports history. We are known for football, baseball, soccer, automotive sports, indoor track and field, basketball and golf, and have hosted everything from 1996 Olympic Soccer to Davis Cup tennis and Bassmasters Classics. We are also known for youth sports and large multi-sport events like the National Senior Games, the World Games and the World Police and Fire Games.
What can visitors expect from the World Games?
The World Games is an international multisport competition and this year it will be held in Birmingham, Alabama from July 7 until July 17. With 3,600 of the world’s best athletes competing from over 100 countries, the Games are one of the most comprehensive sports events ever to take place in the Southeastern United States and the first time they’ve been held in the U.S. since the Games were founded in 1981. Visitors can expect to see world-class athletes compete in 34 sports, from surfing to sumo, over the course of 11 days.
How can visitors make the most of the Games?
Come early and stay late as there will be much to do throughout July. Visitors should bring some comfortable shoes and enjoy all that Birmingham and TWG 2022 has to offer.
