We held our final working test of the season near Lichfield in Staffordshire by kind permission of Richard and Sarah Bailye.

Twenty-seven AV retrievers took part in a hotly contested open cold game test, held in a field of shin-deep fodder beet which proved an excellent venue.

The first two rounds were walked-up in line with the Guns, with each competitor having two retrieves in front of the line. Round three was on similar lines but this time the dogs needed to retrieve one from the opposite diagonal and, by and large, made a good show of it. Following lunch, the judges made the cut to 14 dogs to contest round four. This time we were still walking in line but the Guns and throwers were a good 150 yards down the line and slightly downhill from the dogs and handlers. Each dog had to retrieve two blind “rabbits” dropped either in front or behind the line. At the end of the drive the judges called for a two-dog run-off for first and second place. This run-off was a straight seen retrieve 60 yards away, but the dogs had to negotiate a fence prior to retrieving.

Award winners, from left: Bob Clay, Neil Dutton, Stephen Le Voi, Carol Probert, Lewis Butler and Amy Collier.
