sothebys, london www.gavingardiner.com which acts for the campaign group you forgot the Birds. led by sir ian Botham, the group was “set up in 2014 to provide a challenge the rspb’s viewpoint”.
the article repeated a number of the group’s previous criticisms of the rspb, including that it is failing to take an adequately robust approach to predator control to protect ground-nesting birds and that it had become too focused to show a surplus of more than £2million, closer examination revealed a more complex picture. a report admitted that a change in the way some expenses were accounted for “would result in a deficit of £4.1million, rather than a surplus of £2.6million, and some of our financial reserves have been utilised to fund this deficit”.
While the deficit is not of the scale suggested on guido fawkes, it has required the rspb to dip into its reserves and to sell a £3million property. a senior rspb officer has confirmed that the charity is being forced to shed jobs.
Commenting on a post on the rspb blog site, conservation director martin harper said:
“over a three-year period we expect there to be between 200 to 300 fewer staff working for us compared with 2017 levels.”
he was unable to confirm that there would not be any compulsory redundancies, saying: “our plan is to do what we can where possible to avoid mandatory redundancy.”
some rspb members expressed their discontent, with one asking: “When was the rspb going to let the membership know that around 10 per cent of the staff are being made redundant and about the financial difficulties which have presumably caused this decision? We don’t all go to the agm.”
