A POEM TO LIVE BY
regarding the Young shots article (real poetry in motion, 21 November), richard Negus refers to the great poem A Father’s Advice. Mark hanbury Beaufoy’s words were imprinted upon me from a very early age and I was told — or rather commanded — by my father to memorise these words and recite them to the entire family with hands behind my back and head held high.
“only then,” my father said, “will you understand the true meaning of the words.” Looking back on it now, learning the words did me a lot of good and I can still recite the poem even now in my old age.
When I am fortunate to raise a gun to a pheasant or partridge, the words of the poem come floating back and remind me again and again of the safety orders in the field. I only hope

Hare, Gloucestershire I really enjoyed Mr stoffell’s article on using every bit of venison because it is so important not to waste such delicious and nutritious meat (Waste not, want not, 21 November). having the expertise and knowledge of butchering a carcase is invaluable to a fieldsportsman, as I have learned over the years.
however, though sika are tasty, the real prize is muntjac. If you can get your hands on a haunch, smoke it then slice it into thin strips. With a glass of sauvignon blanc, it goes down quite well.
B. Gavendell, Devon I am reluctant to give American huntress Larysa switlyk yet more publicity — as it seems that’s what she craves — but I was horrified by the vile pictures of her with a dead sheep and an adult toy covered in blood.
Many of my friends were disgusted by her earlier social media posts in which she posed with various animals she’d killed and boasted about her prowess. I defended her, explaining about cull beasts and pointing out that she had harvested the animals for the table.
But now she has gone too far. My understanding is that she is a qualified accountant so is clearly not stupid, but her actions would suggest otherwise. Any support she might have had from the shooting and fieldsports communities has been
