Shell out for decoys?
AIRGUNS
I am thinking about buying a set of shell decoys because they are easier to carry than full-bodied ones. My only concern is that they may not be suited to the sort of shooting I do. Are they lifelike enough to persuade birds to land on the ground when I am using my airgun?
I often use shell decoys and while the occasional bird spooks away soon after landing, I don’t think it happens any more than it does with full-bodied ones. Because shell decoys pack into each other, they are a lot easier to carry in numbers, and I sometimes mix the two different designs to add a bit of variation to my fake flock.
Rather than struggling to get birds to settle among the decoys to offer me a shot, I often set up close to sitty trees and try to persuade pigeons to pitch in those. They are much easier to shoot with an airgun when perched still on a branch than when they are waddling around on the ground and bobbing their heads up and down to peck at whatever they are feeding on.
