Lead is still in the game
FIREARMS LAW
I have heard that it is now illegal to use lead bullets to shoot deer in Scotland. Is that correct?
No, it is not. The Deer Working Group, which was established by the Scottish government in 2017, has recently made nearly 100 recommendations, one of which is that the Scottish government should make a clear commitment to end the use of lead bullets to shoot deer in Scotland and that it should carry out the necessary research and promotion to enable that change to be made after a transition period. Obviously, the Scottish government will have to consider this and the other recommendations fully before legislating.
The working group has also suggested that the minimum weight of a bullet for use on the larger species of deer be reduced to 80-gr to accommodate the use of smaller calibres, such as .243 Win, when using non-lead bullets. GD
