Seeing red differences

-

What’s the difference between the red deer that are found in Scotland and those found in different parts of England? It seems that one is much bigger than the other.

Are they the same species?

They are all the same species. As you will know, red deer are native to the mainland of Britain and are also found on a number of our offshore islands. The native red deer of Britain (Cervus elaphus scoticus) generally live in Scotland and limited parts of England.

The species evolved after the Ice Age as smaller animals suited to harsher mountainous areas. Those in England have mostly developed through deliberate introductions, often originating from larger European stock. This, coupled with an easier climate and environment, explains their larger stature.

It’s important to remember that the ‘native’ stock has also been added to over the years in attempts to improve it. Most, if not all, red deer found in the UK and Ireland carry mixed genetics. IW
