Night ferreting

-

I have been asked to ferret a paddock at night due to it being in a built-up area. I’ve never done anything like this before. Can you share any tips?

How exciting.

Night ferreting is something every ferreter should try at least once.

Nothing makes your senses go into overdrive more than ferreting under cloak of darkness. To ferret at night, you need to use your eyes (and ears) to spot the ferrets when they are on top of the ground.

White ferrets fitted with bells and a small glow stick taped to their collars helps, or use luminous livestock markers to make the ferrets stand out.

Use bright nets and wear a head torch, but remember the fundamentals of ferreting: silence, patience and do not shine a light down the burrow pipes. The rest is down to the rabbits. SW
