Rich pickings for squirrels

- AIRGUNNING

I shot a lot of grey squirrels around my feeding stations during spring and early summer, but they have really backed away over recent weeks. I am still seeing plenty around the woods, so why have they lost interest in my feeders?

Feeders loaded with peanuts or maize will often attract grey squirrels right through the year, but they can lose their appeal when natural food is really abundant.

This year’s beechmast crop came early in a lot of areas and I wouldn’t be surprised if that has lured the squirrels away from your feeding stations.

There is no reason why your cull should be disrupted by the glut of natural goodies. All you need to do is target the squirrels around the trees that are heavy with their favourite seasonal pickings. MM
