Muntjac in hard antler

-

I have been monitoring a large muntjac buck on my trail cam and have watched it through binoculars on a couple of occasions. It looks to be of trophy quality and I am reluctant to shoot it in velvet. When would you expect it to be in hard antler?

Mature muntjac bucks, once they have adjusted to the annual antler cycle, can be expected to shed in spring or early summer and to grow new antlers over the summer months.

Fraying mostly occurs during August and bucks will generally be in hard antler towards the end of August or early in September. However, as with all things in the natural world, there are no hard and fast rules, so you should keep checking your trail cam. GD
