Stalking reward for dogs

- GRALLOCH

I note that you always give your dog Zosia the kidneys after the gralloch and sometimes part of the heart. Why don’t you take those parts to eat yourself?

The easy answer is that often I do. There is nothing finer than some pan-fried kidneys or liver with bacon for breakfast straight after the outing — the traditional ‘stalker’s breakfast’. However, I have always given my dogs a reward after we have shot a deer, which really concentrates their minds on the job in hand. They then always have a vested interest in indicating a deer when they scent one as we stalk and, after the shot, when searching for it, because they know a treat is coming after we get to the shot beast.
