This was the book I chose to take with me on my journey to the moors in August and one I would recommend to anyone fortunate enough to be heading off in pursuit of ‘Glorious Grouse’. comfortabl­e offering to a cigar newbie, but also someone who is an old hand. After an initial salty start, it develops into a smooth and creamy smoke, something akin to a salted caramel.

At 5½in and 52 ring gauge, it’s a great-sized cigar that should last around an hour. With all cigar prices seeing scary rises of late, at £30 a stick it’s a reasonable cigar for the money.

Brian P Martin ranks alongside the very best of British sporting authors and here he is in his element explaining what makes the grouse the ‘king’ of gamebirds. A mix of science and anecdote with evocative photos and illustrati­ons, this is a book that will not disappoint fans of Martin’s writing.
