BGA addresses game prices

-

British Game Assurance (BGA) has urged caution over hopes that prices for feathered game will recover substantially this season. There has been talk in recent weeks of improved prices for game, and of shoots that previously had game uplifted now being paid for it again.

Liam Stokes of BGA told Shooting Times: “As ever, the picture is mixed. Supply and demand is having an effect; the demand for game continues to increase as hospitality comes back online and adds to the significant gains we’ve made in the retail and public procurement markets over the past four years. But we have to recognise that the other half of the equation is a dip in supply as a result of very unhappy circumstances that no one would wish on our sector.

“The emphasis among those processors willing to pay is quality. Lead-free, well-handled and Bgaassured are common but not universal requirements for payment. Overall, we anticipate a very good Christmas, new outlets and increased demand from existing stockists. The challenge is to make sure we have enough high-quality birds to meet that demand, but it is that challenge which is now increasing the value of shot game.”
