Early origins of Clumbers
Clumber spaniels hold no genetic connection to our native spaniel breeds, so the origins of the breed are still under scrutiny. They are thought to have come to the UK during the French Revolution, when the Duke of Noailles, fearing for the safety of his prized kennel, filled a ship with spaniels destined for the Duke of Newcastle at his seat in Clumber Park. Later on, the Royal Family became a key proponent in the longevity of the breed, with Prince Albert, King Edward VII and King George V all playing their part. Today, HRH The Princess Royal has a close involvement, as president of the WCSS.
